West Covina's 84 Points Sets Record In Championship Win

Rahshaun Haylock -- @rhaylock (CBS) -- It was a record-breaking night for the West Covina high school football team as they defeated La Serna 84-21 to capture their second straight CIF Southern Section Southeast Division Championship. The 84 points is a CIF-SS record for the most points scored in a championship game, surpassing J.W. North's 67 points scored in the 2007 Eastern Division championship.

"Our goal was to get 80 and that's what we did.  That's a pretty amazing score right there," said West Covina running back Chris Solomon.

The Bulldogs played like they were on a true championship quest, jumping on the Lancers early.  La Serna fumbled, had a punt blocked, and a pass intercepted in their first three possessions of the game. Each mistake was in their own zone and proved costly.
West Covina (13-1) needed just one play to capitalize on the Lancers (10-4) first mistake. Solomon, the reigning Southeast Division Player of the Year, rushed it in from 27 yards for one of his three touchdowns on the night.

When Solomon wasn't carrying the load, he stepped aside for backfield mate Jimmy Frazier, who had two rushing touchdowns and a kickoff return for a touchdown.

West Covina led 49-7 at halftime.

The Bulldogs win back-to-back CIF titles for the first time in school history. It's their fourth title in school history.

"I thought going into the game it was going to be tough and our kids just played hard and capitalized on every mistake they made it seemed like," said West Covina head coach Mike Maggiore.
