'Just (Follow) The Rules' To Navigate The Holiday Feeding Frenzy

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Are you worried about packing on a few pounds over the holidays? New York Times Best Selling author Tosca Reno's latest book, "Just The Rules," packs a powerful punch and is here just in time to help you navigate the holiday feeding frenzy. She stopped by KCAL9 Wednesday to share her rules!

Just "A Few" Rules:

Rule #14: A treat is not a cheat...a treat is a treat! - That means we have to change our thinking and call all unclean foods a treat, we still must eat them in moderation, but you can't beat yourself up by feeling like a failure for "cheating."

Rule #42: Green is not just for growing (or for Christmas trees for that matter). We all know that broccoli and brussels sprouts are good for you. But if you incorporate greens like spinach or swiss chard least once a day into your diet it will boost your immune system and will help your body ward of that cold you just pick up by shaking so and so's hand at the holiday party.

Rule# 40: LP +CC sitting in a tree... k-i-s-s-i-n-g. This stands for Lean Protein and Complex Carbohydrates, which should always be together at every meal. A split from this magic duo may leave you splitting your pants. In order to experience a fat-burning, metabolism-boosting energy peak you must consume both lean protein and complex carbs together every 2-3 hours or 5-6 "meals" per day.

Rule #50: Healthy fats, healthy fun- There is definitely, no shortage of fats around during the holidays, the trick is to choose the right ones. Avocados (can you say guacamole), coconut, flaxseed, and pumpkin oils are some of my favorites. They help keep your machine running smoothly, stoke your metabolic rate and make your skin glow.

Rule #39: Alcohol-the other legal drug. Tosca is not going to tell to live without it, but try to save it for special occasions (if you have three holiday parties to go to in one week, pick one of them as your "special occasion" and some sip sparkling water with a lemon during the other two!) Youʼll graze less on the food, and feel better the next day. And donʼt argue about the "health" benefits of wine, you can get antioxidants from unfermented berries too!
