Spooked Horse Runs Over Owner During Christmas Parade In Hemet

HEMET (CBS) — A spooked horse that had been drawing a carriage in the Hemet Christmas Parade later ran over one of its owners, the Hemet Police Department reported Sunday.

The carriage had carried Grand Marshal Rose Salgado and two of her grandchildren at Saturday's parade. They had just been dropped off shortly before noon at the end of the parade route in the 100 block of North Harvard Street when the horse became scared.

As the owners tried to change out the bridle the horse bolted, police Cpl. Frank Pitetti said.

"The owners were not able to contain the horse and it ran north on Harvard Street with the carriage still attached," Pitetti said. "One of the owners fell to the ground while trying to control the horse and was run over by the carriage."

The horse-drawn carriage continued northbound on Latham Avenue and the carriage struck two light poles, two parked vehicles and then overturned on the grass embankment along the south side of the Hemet Public Library, according to Pitetti.

Nanci Boyd, one of the owners, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Nobody else was hurt, according to Pitetti.

The horse was not injured and was taken back to the owner's ranch, he said.
