LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — Los Angeles police used nearly a dozen undercover detectives to infiltrate the Occupy LA encampment before this week’s raid to gather information on the anti-Wall Street protesters’ intentions, according to media reports Friday.

None of the officers slept at the camp, but they tried to blend in during the weeks leading up to the raid to learn about plans to resist or use weapons against police, a police source told the Los Angeles Times.

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing.

The undercover work yielded information that some protesters were preparing bamboo spears and other potentially dangerous weapons in advance of an expected eviction, none of which were used, according to the City News Service, which first reported the story.

Police downplayed the significance of the undercover work since Occupy meetings were public and easily tracked.

Police officer Cleon Joseph declined an Associated Press request for comment on the reports.

Occupy L.A. protester Mario Brito told City News Service he was not surprised by the revelation, but said it was “tantamount to 1950s McCarthyism.”

Meanwhile, the city attorney’s office filed criminal misdemeanor charges Friday against 27 more of the people who were arrested following the police sweep of the camp.

In all, 46 of the 291 people arrested during the raid have been charged with misdemeanor crimes of failure to disperse from an unlawful assembly. Some also were charged with resisting arrest.

The arrests came Wednesday during a pre-dawn raid on City Hall Park, where nearly 500 tents had been erected.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has stated that demonstrators would be welcome to continue to protest outside City Hall. However, the city attorney’s office recommended to the courts Friday that 46 people charged with crimes related raid not be allowed back in the area.

The spears etc… being prepared is not at all surprising considering the violence of the Occupy Oakland, NY etc………..

As commented b 4, the uncertainty of present conditions makes the monitoring of “movements” not only probable but necessary. I believe the violence was held to a minimum b cuz the media as well as the members of the movement were in concert, thus keeping the message intact and the behavior of all concerned held to the noblest of standards. The only violence i saw was the imposition of will @ a negative level. That said, the Consitution seems to be the appropriate ave. for the possibility of real change. A re-interpretation would be in order and a dialogue to that end should and must be the goal (inclusive as that would be).Bless the nobility and courage of all who see this as a rightful end to our further progress as a united and spirited people who wish to better our society….Thanx for the opportunity to say it (1st amendment). ‘Nuff said

How’s that sanctuary city thing going?
There are 800,000, illegals in LA in a population of 2,400,000 and spends $1,600,000 PER DAY

The biggest threat to our country isn’t from Terrorists, or corporations, but rather from millions of Mexican and Central American Insurgents who have silently invaded our country, and are now poised to take over the country from legitimate ways such as legislation on a National and State level, to plain intimidation on a local level based on the lie that if you oppose them, you must be racist, to criminal ways such as violent demonstrations, crime sprees, and murder.

$115,000,000,000 to support them nationally
    $200,000,000,000 in depressed wages
15,000,000, of them, you people hire them.
We don’t need that many farm workers.
2011, 15,000,000 illegals and millions of anchor babies in America and they triple every 18 years, reality:
    2029, 50,000,000
    2047, 150,000,000
The marches and rallies conducted by Illegal Immigrants always fly the Mexican Flag and praise Mexico while denouncing the United States and criticizing the U.S. citizens as racists for not allowing them free access to break our laws and have sovereignty of their homeland over the sovereignty of the U.S.
