Man Dead After 10-Hour Standoff With Police
LA MIRADA (CBS) — A man barricaded himself in a home Friday for nearly ten hours while firing shots outside, prompting the evacuation of nearby Los Coyotes Middle School in La Mirada, before killing himself.
The standoff began about 7:30 a.m. as deputies investigated a reported gunshot in the 14600 block of Mercado Avenue, according to sheriff's Sgt. Greg Arnold of the Norwalk Station.
Upon arrival, the man's female roommate told deputies the suspect had shot himself and he had a history of suicide attempts, sheriff's deputies said.
Deputies noticed what appeared to be blood outside the home and called in the Special Enforcement Bureau.
About 400 students were taken from Las Coyotes Middle School, 14640 Mercado Ave., to the gym at La Mirada Regional Park as a precaution, sheriff's deputies said.
During the standoff, the suspect fired several shots out of the house, with the last shot being fired just before 1 p.m., officials said.
At 4:30 p.m., after the last dose of tear gas failed to get the suspect to come out, Special Enforcement Bureau personnel used an Armored Response Vehicle to remove the front door of the house and deputies went inside.
The suspect was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a gun was recovered at the scene.
Deputies did not fire their weapons during the incident.
