Man Allegedly Stabs His 89-Year-Old Grandmother To Death With Broom

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A man allegedly stabbed his 89-year-old grandmother with a snapped broom and then barricaded himself inside a home in South Los Angeles Tuesday.

The stabbing happened at approximately 2 p.m. in the 900 block of West 41 Street, across the street from Manual Arts High School.

A family member called police and the elderly woman was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"It's not him, It's not him," said the suspect's sister, Anika. She said her brother was not usually aggressive and may have taken drugs.

"We love him. I don't know what got into him," Anika Thomas said.

Brent Thomas later barricaded himself in a shed behind the home where the woman was stabbed.

A SWAT team later managed to take the suspect into custody shortly after 6 p.m.
