Police: Armed Man Fatally Shot During Pedestrian Stop

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Los Angeles police say they have shot a man during some sort of altercation just south of downtown.

The officer-involved shooting near Jefferson Boulevard and Paloma Street occurred about 8:10 a.m. Friday, Los Angeles police Lt. Patricia Milewski said.

The man, identified only as being 28, was taken to County-USC Medical Center where he later died during surgery. His name was not immediately released.

Although details leading up to the shooting remain unclear, police said the man was detained during a routine pedestrian stop.

"Somewhere, he pulled out a weapon. And one of the officers, fearing for his life, fired three rounds, hitting the suspect twice," said Los Angeles police Sgt. Manny Ramirez of the Newton station.
