One man was found shot in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue south of South Street in Long Beach just before 6 p.m. Saturday, said Lisa Massacani of the Long Beach Police Department.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers arrived and found one adult male deceased in the street. What we know so far is that there was some sort of confrontation between the victim and the suspect prior to the shooting," Massacani said. The incident is being investigated as a gang-related event.

A friend of the victim said he believed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

"He was not a gang member. Ne didn't have any gang tattoos, he wasn't out there like that. He was a basketball player; he was about six-five. He used to go to El Camino College -- he was about basketball, he wasn't about whatever this situaiton was," said Terreon Wiltz.

Wiltz described the victim as Matt Collins, who had been a friend of his for 10 years.

"I heard that he was walking down the street going to the store and somebody put up on him, and they start shooting," Wiltz said.

About half a mile away, in the parking lot of a Food 4 Less grocery store located in the 2100 block of South Street, another man was found with injured with at least one gunshot wound.

"About four minutes after the Ackerfield shooting, officers were flagged down at the location at South Street and Cherry," Massacani said.

The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police said the two shootings were not believed to be related.

Long Beach Police asked that anyone with information contact them.
