TEMECULA (CBS) — If you’re headed for the malls for some Christmas shopping on Black Friday, you may want to consider turning off your cell phone.
That’s because at least one Southland shopping center has revealed that it will track shoppers every time they use their cell phones on the premises.
Officials at the Promenade Temecula mall said they will use cell phone data to determine which stores are getting the most traffic during the busy holiday season.
But they deny using the data for marketing purposes or any other use beyond foot traffic and insist that personal information will be gathered on any shopper.
Cell phone carriers can typically only reveal the names of account holders and their phone number under very stringent legal guidelines.
