OC Market Fined $527K For Falsely-Labeled 'Halal' Meat

ANAHEIM (CBS) — An Anaheim supermarket agreed to pay a $527,000 fine for falsely advertising generic meat as being Islamic approved.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports the fine comes after Super King Market misleadingly labeled some of its meat products.

"Halal" is an Arabic term used to describe meat butchered in the name of "Allah", the Islamic name for God, making the food permissible to eat in accordance with Islamic law.

A judge ordered the civil settlement on Monday, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

The district attorney's office began its investigation into the case in 2010 after the county health officials learned there was possible mishandling of meats at Super King Market.

"There were various meats being delivered to the store that were not clearly marked or labeled, but all of these meats were ending up in the same display case," said Orange County district attorney spokesperson Farrah Emami.

For any meat product to be considered halal, they must be properly segregated from other meats and designated as halal by a sign, placard or similar advertisement.

Super King Market has multiple locations in Southern California, but this settlement is exclusive to the Anaheim location.
