Holiday Temp Jobs: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — If you've been hired to help this holiday, find out how to make the most out of that temporary job!

Mike "Dr. Woody" Woodward visited the KCAL 9 studios Tuesday.

The holiday season isn't just when retailers make most of their money for the year – it's also when they do the most hiring. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers are projected to bring on between 480,000 and 500,000 temporary workers this holiday season, which is about the same as last year. Macy's alone will be bringing on nearly 78,000 holiday temps!

The key is not to think of a holiday temp job as just a way to get that nice discount, it can also be a path to future employment! A holiday temp job is a great way to get that proverbial foot-in-the-door. Dr. Woody will share some ways to help you parlay your temp job into a future career opportunity!

Make the Most of It

The thing a lot of job-seekers don't always realize is that "temp" jobs can easily turn into more permanent ones when the holiday season is over. When taking on a holiday temp job be sure to make the most of it and consider the following tips:

· Impress the Right People – Always find out who the decision makers are and how to get on their radar. Be sure to do your job well and do it with passion. Also, let them know what else you have to offer that may get you noticed as someone with potential.

· Build Your Network – Every person you interact with is a potential gateway to opportunities. Make sure to make meaningful connections with coworkers, vendors, and customers. You never know who they may know! Make them your passive recruiters.

· Look for the Up-sell – Any good salesperson is always looking for opportunities to up-sell or add to the shopping cart. Always keep your eyes open for opportunities to leverage your skills in ways your boss may not realize. At the end of the day, it's up to you to educate them on where your true value lies.

· Stay Linked-In – Just in case the temp job still ends after the holidays, remember that it doesn't mean that your relationships should end. Be sure to keep in touch with everyone you worked with and use social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter). If you made the right impression, keeping in touch will keep that good impression fresh and they'll think of you first when opportunities arise.

The bottom line is simple: Use temping as an opportunity to get a foot-in-the-door! There are a lot of temping opportunities this season beyond retail. Keep your eyes open and be sure to make the most of every opportunity. You never know, a holiday temp job may end up being the gift that keeps on giving!
