SANTA CLARITA (CBS) — Two suspects in an Arizona car theft stole a state park police SUV in the Castaic area Monday while they were being arrested and leading authorities on a wild pursuit across surface streets and freeways before they were eventually arrested.

The chase began about 10:30 a.m. near Smokey Bear Road and Pyramid Lake Road, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

The chase went onto the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway, and was continuing more than a half hour later, with the white SUV being followed by officers in black-and-white cars.

The suspects exited the 5 Freeway and began driving along surface streets and barreled through an intersection, sideswiping at least four vehicles.

According to the CHP, the suspects had been stopped by state park police and were in the process of being arrested.

A female suspect had been handcuffed and placed in the SUV, but somehow the male suspect eluded the arresting officers and jumped into the police SUV and drove off, according to the CHP.

The suspects ended the pursuit on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Sylmar when they stopped the vehicle and CHP officers placed them into custody.

One suspect was apparently shot when the vehicle was originally taken earlier Monday morning. An ambulance was on scene to transport him to the hospital.
