Baldwin Hills Police Respond To Smash And Grab Robbery Inside Macy's Store

BALDWIN HILLS (CBS) — Four robbers went on a smash and grab inside a Macy's department store Monday night, and a store employee managed to tackle one of the suspects before he could escape.

CBS2 journalist Juan Fernandez was the first reporter on the scene, at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in South Los Angeles.

Shortly before the store closed at 9 p.m., the suspects went to the jewelry section and began smashing glass display cases with a hammer, Fernandez reported. Some shoppers thought the sounds were gunfire and reported to police that shots had been fired.

A loss prevention officer witnessed the robbery and was able to hold on to one of the four men. The three others fled the scene on foot onto Crenshaw Boulevard.

The robbery sent a store employee into shock and she was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Officials have not said whether any jewelry was taken.
