Eric Garcetti To Resign As President Of Los Angeles City Council

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Eric Garcetti is resigning as president of the Los Angeles City Council.

Garcetti, who wants to concentrate on his 2013 mayoral campaign, says he will introduce a motion at Friday's council meeting to start the process.

"I'm running for mayor to get L.A. and our economy back on track," Garcetti said back in September.

The fourth-generation Angeleno promises "focused leadership based on experience, practical know-how, and a willingness to embrace innovation."

He joins fellow City Council member Jan Perry, City Controller Wendy Gruel and Deputy Mayor Austin Buetner as serious contenders to replace termed-out Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Garcetti says he wants councilman Herb Wesson to be his successor.
