Social Workers To Assist Growing Homeless Population At Occupy LA

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Social workers are gearing up to provide services for the homeless individuals at the Ocuppy L.A. protest, according to a news report.

Approximately seven percent of the campers are homeless and sources say that number is on the rise.

The participants are not turning anyone away from the site or from the free meals offered at its food tent, but organizer Darren Danks told LAist.com that the group is debating whether they should serve meals only to those actively serving in the camp.

LAist.com also reports that culinary groups who have served the protestors, like the culinary program at Santee High School, have been targeted by L.A. County health inspectors.

The site reports: "On November 11, the L.A. County Health Department restricted certain types of food at the Occupy L.A. food tent. Under the new limitations, Occupy L.A. 'cannot serve any unwrapped hot or cold food that was not prepared in a certified kitchen, though it can continue to distribute commercially prepackaged food.'"
