Farmers Field To Have Removable Roof

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Drawings for a proposed football stadium to be built in downtown Los Angeles call for an open-air modernistic structure with a novel, removable roof.

Ron Turner, principal of architectural firm Gensler that is designing the 72,000-seat stadium, on Tuesday revealed a new design with a partial roof over the sidelines that extends up and over the building like wings.

The playing field could be left open or covered with a "deployable" roof made of a translucent material that would be lifted into the opening and locked into place.

Project manager Tim Romani said at a press conference that a retractable roof would have meant a heavy rooftop when the design of the building was meant to be light and airy.

The stadium would cost $700 million.
