Desperate Dad Robs GameStop Store In Huntington Beach

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — Huntington Beach Police Tuesday searched for a desperate dad, who apparently turned to robbery to feed his kids.

The man robbed a GameStop store, telling the clerk that he was sorry, but that he needed money so his kids could eat.

The robbery took place on October 13.

Security photos depicted the man waiting until other customers left, and then handing over a piece of paper with a demand for $3,000.

The man then escaped with the cash.

  1. ILLEGALS says:

WoW! Must be a busy day for Gamestop to have $3,000 cash in their cash register..

Inside Job? How he knew Gamestop had that much Cash on hand?

    1. Tarrop says:

Gamestops are hauling in the cash with the new big releases; my nephew works at one, and made a deposit of over 20,000. the other night. This was at a store in a small town, not a city

      1. Marlo Franson says:

so it’s best to rob the store on new release dates. not.

      2. NC Boy says:

$20,000 in a day is $33 per minute (and that’s allowing a 10 hour day). That’s a small town that likes their games – or you are exaggerating.

      3. Jackie says:

Your nephew is an idiot and you are a bigger idiot for believing him.

        Thanks for playing!

      4. Mr T. A. Pon says:

You are very bitter, That time of the month Jackie?

    2. Lol says:

      3 things you have forgotten

      1) Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
      2) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
      3) Battlefield 3

They all came out this month and all have very large fan bases. I’m surprised the guy didn’t get more.

      1. Jackie says:

Yes. He robbed the store on October 13th so he could get all the money from the sales of three games that didn’t come until November (well, technically B3 came out on October 25).

        Reading is fundamental!

        Thanks for playing!

    3. CB says:

Where does it say how much cash he actually got?

Perhaps reading isn’t your strong suit?

      1. Dawg57 says:

CB, reread the last line. “The man then escaped with the cash.” The way the story is written I believe the man did indeed get the cash he had demanded.

      2. Chris says:

“handing over a piece of paper with a demand for $3,000.

The man then escaped with the cash.”

If you paid attention in English class, you would know that this is inferring that he got all the cash.

      3. Chris is dumb says:

Chris it is implied… Inferences are what you make… Nice try

    4. Adolfo says:

ILLEGALS (ignorant) Where in the article does it state he got the amount he demanded? If they only had $ 100.00, $500.00, $700.00, etc. you think he would of said “ok, get the rest I will be back tomorrow”… Don’t be so naive there Sir/Ma’am. And change your name you ignorant f*u*c*k

  2. Bill Mason says:

I don’t think the DA is going to have too much luck in finding this guy. If his story is true, then even if they do catch him, his sentence would be minimal. this search is a waste of taxpayers resources.

    1. Me says:

So now we don’t prosecute robbery? Really? There are food banks to help him. He doesn’t get to rob stores. I’m a taxpayer and I think getting him behind bars would be a fine use of my resources.

      1. Jim Hinds says:

Yup, let’s tell Javert about this Jean Vanjean guy, and put him away for good.

      2. Bill Mason says:

The real criminals are in elected office. Don’t see anyone real froggy to prosecute them. The food banks are much more likely to help the poor illegal immigrant than the middle aged white guy trying to feed his kids… The reason we have problems in this country is because people refuse to use common sense and see reality for what it is. When justice is blind, justice works. Otherwise its just the strong arm of those in charge at the time…

      3. Me too says:

I agree. However, if he and his family are homeless and he tries to collect benefits, CPS may take his kids and put them in foster care. This has happened in the past and is happening now. Though the $3,0000 figure is interesting. How did he come up with that number?

      4. thussaiththewalrus says:

Bill Mason: You really have NOT done your homework. When you look at the: cops, teachers, health workers, administrators, treasurers, bookkeepers, doctors, lawyers, elected Representatives, Senators, and Judges who have been imprisoned, the list is LONG!!!!

Most civil servants and elected officials do GREAT work, the bad guys are targeted, investigated, and, if convicted, GO TO PRISON!!!!!

      5. American Patriot says:

If he is a God-fearing, white, heterosexual, Republican Christian, he must go free!!!
If he is a non-white, hang him high!

      6. Becky says:

Food banks only help out so much and it depends on if they have enough in stock. Have to remember that food banks have been suffering right now as well and you can only go to some of them twice a month. Not saying that I am for what he did, just pointing something out. I could never rob someone to feed my family, the risk is too great, but people do crazy things when they are desperate.

      7. Skeeve says:

Indeed. The robber is also a liar. With the equivalent of the entire nation of Spain within our borders on Food Stamps, I think this man could have managed to qualify.

      8. rich says:

no jury would convict him of this if his story is true and if he is a first timer even the DA would not be likely to deal with it. i for one would pat this man on the sholder and personally pay his legal fees if he did go to trial. yes it was extreem but if his goal was to feed his kids then i applaud him

  3. billy says:

3 grand? What do his kids eat?

    1. NY9Solyndra says:

Maybe he didn’t want to have to go back every day.

    2. thussaiththewalrus says:

Due to the positive influence of FLOTUS, he is preparing himself to teach his children that they are to learn to savor and enjoy and expect “STEAK AND RADICCHIO.”

Hopefully, he will not teach them FLOTUS’ greed for vodka, wine, lobster, shrimp, ice cream, and living on everyone else’s nickel!

      1. sdfas says:

gee Charles your stupidity far excedes his “ignorance” or maybe you are just too stupid to understand what the word ignorance means?

How does it feel to be able to carry 2 totally contradictory thoughts in ones head and see nothing wrong with it whatsoever?

      1. gsggdsf says:

      2. jasperddbgghost says:

So… you want to cut the spending that’s destroying the country so you can turn right around and increase spending in another area? An area that we’re already spending inordinate amounts in anyway? An area that turns citizens into government-dependents, sucking of the teat of the nanny state? Government-dependents who will obviously vote liek the zombies they are for more politician leeches and bigger government, feeding the vicious cycle?

      Shut up.

  11. btcoates says:

Let me guess, the guy doesn’t have any friends, isn’t religious or hasn’t ever heard of a food bank/soup kitchen. But I would bet that if/when they find him, there is at least 3 cell phones, 2 computers, an HDTV and at least one game system in his house!

  12. rikki doxx says:

Food stamps? Was he making too much to qualify for food stamps? Even illegals get food stamps.

    1. Princess Tyra says:

Only the illegals qualify for them..Americans who had paid for it in past taxes arent able to get them. But if you wear a diaper on your head or can mow a lawn in six minutes and have a jalepeno pack of dirty kids, you get all you want.

      1. Brian says:

I can tell how much you love your neighbors and people who are not just like you from this.

      2. Becky says:

In a way she is right but without all the stereotyping, I know first hand about that one. When my hubby was laid off from work indefinitely, we filed for unemployment and followed all the steps they asked us too. They even helped us sign up for benefits, now before he was laid off we lived paycheck to paycheck. When you go in for this meeting with your potential caseworker they have you bring in all this information including your last 3 or 4 pay stubs.

The federal government does not allow them to base your income on your net pay, but it is based on your gross pay which is how they calculate whether or not you qualify. Even though my husband was only getting $300 a week for 4 people on unemployment, they said they could not help us. We were $10 over the limit and not considered poverty level even though he did not have a job. It was all based on what he previously made and they told us we would have to wait and apply again.

As I was sitting there in the waiting room, I was reading all this so-called useful information about what to do if your in need of their services. There is a section that says if you cannot provide a social security number and your not a U.S. Citizen, you can still get food stamps. How is this fair? We had to bring in Picture ID’s, SS cards, Birth Certificates, Rental Agreement, Utility Bills, Proof of a Car, Proof of any money we had in the bank, Report Cards and Shot Records for the kids, get a paper filled out by someone who could vouch for the members in our household and a few more other things. Illegals that enter this country and ask for help do not even have to show an 1/8 of this information.

So yes I can understand her frustration, I have been through it and seen it in action. The lady that called us back basically snubbed us, told my kids to sit quietly before they even made any noise ( they were 8 and 16) and talked down to us. Before she called us in, she called in a Hispanic family and she gave them a warm greeting, shook their hands, smiled at the kids and held the door open for them. So maybe Princess Tyra went a little overboard in her stereotypes but blame it first on the people who instill these stereotypes.

      3. Bandit says:

Brian, I can tell you don’t remember that not so long ago, our country wasn’t attempting to play host to the third world. Diversity is not a source of strength, no matter how many times the government-funded PSAs tell us it is. Try emigrating to Australia or nearly any other country in the world. You must bring with you a job skill that is needed and be able to support yourself. In Mexico, you may not become a resident if you will disrupt the national demographics. Indeed, if we adopted the Mexican immigration policies wholesale, we’d be worlds better off than we are under the insane scheme we currently have.

      4. Brian says:

        Hey Becky –

Thank you for taking the time to write that thought-provoking response. You and your family will be in my thoughts.

The store owner is a billion dollar company.

      Gamestops are not franchise operations.

      1. Donkeys Stink says:

so what… the company still has to make up the loss… or is this just the grand plan to push the OWS agenda?

        Nov 2012 cometh

      2. BOHICA says:

Oh, so it’s ok to steal from a big corp. but not a little guy? Or are you just making an informative statement?

      3. Becky says:

Gamestops may be a billion dollar company but they can still be franchised. There are some in our are that are franchises and a friend of mine works for one. That is why not all Gamestops carry the same new inventory as others except for some of new releases that people pay in advance for. That is the same for fast food restaurants like McDonald’s and Taco Bell.

      4. Jackie says:

        Dear Becky,

ALL GameStop’s are owned by the company. Let me repeat this..ALL GAMESTOP’S ARE OWNED BY THE COMPANY.

If you care to refute this, don’t bother. I once worked in the higher offices of GS.

        Thanks for playing though!

    2. Marlo Franson says:

store owner has insurance or should, he gets his money back, but will probable have to improve on the camera to prevent robbery again.

      1. I DO work for food says:

So, the insurance company pays out. The store owner’s rates go up. In other words, his cost still goes up. This robbery wasn’t “free” money. When will people learn that everything has a cost to somebody?

  15. J.j. Erler says:

If the guy went to get help in the form of food stamps, WIC, his local churches, charities and food banks and ALL of them told him they weren’t going to feed his kid, then maybe the guy gets some consideration — but I find it hard to believe a community with a Gamestop is not large enough to have these resources. How are people too proud to get help from resources available or their own families and friends (shocking idea) — but not too proud to rob someone with a violence or at least the implied threat of it.

  16. MWNewman says:

People people people… The guy obviously is an addict and needed to score some more drugs. Any cop or social worker will tell you that is the real story: not some b.s. about feeding fictional kids.

    Lock his as.s up.

  17. Beezy says:

There is an embarrasment of resources available to struggling families…shelters, churches, kitchens, food stamps, etc. This is not one of them

  18. Jim says:

Anybody thats poor can get food stamps. The people I know that have food stamps are able to spend more on food than I do. What a crock!

Obama’s brand of socialism, which is an amalgamation of the Nationalist and Communist varieties despises America.

Except Islamic America, which is an excellent example of both types since it is a religion that through Sharia Law controls every aspects of one’s life. Virtually enslaving the believer.

National SOCIALIST German WORKERS Party, referred to in English as the NAZI Party (socialism for the German ‘Teutonic’ Race), In reality though no different than the left’s socialism.

Like Stalin, for the white Russians, or Pol Pot, for the Khmer Rouge, or Ho Chi Minh, for the Viet Minh, or Mao, for the Han Chinese.

Socialist Gods that brought death and misery to tens if not hundreds of millions of humans.

Let us not forget our SOCIALIST God, Mein Lord God Obama, for America’s liberal elite, Muslims, OWS and welfare voters on the dole.

    1. Brian says:

If you mean socialism and corporate welfare for the likes of Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, I agree.

But I think your screed is just a pretense for comparing the president, *your* president, to some of the most horrible leaders in recent history.

And none of that has anything to do with a robbery.

  30. Paul Irwin horowitz says:

Lots of people are having difficulty in feeding their families. They are desperate. I think that this man is not a criminal although technically he is. Those that destroyed the economy and undermined the capacity of parents to provide are the criminals.

  32. Overhere says:

  33. Monterey says:

    Expensive dinner!

  34. Chuck says:

$20K isn’t a lot for a gamestop. That’s only 400 copies of a $50 new release, which is the average price of new games now days. Even a small town can generate that much in sales for a game like Call of Duty that sells in quantities above 10 million for each release. My home town only has 14K people in it and during the last CoD release they sold almost 1000 copies the first day.. that is approximately 7% of the population of the town.

    1. I DO work for food says:

And your point is….what? First of all the $50 they charge for the game is not clear profit. They have to pay wholesale for the game, pay the employees, rent on the store, utilities, insurance, tax, etc. Besides, when did it become acceptable to rob someone just because they have something you don’t? Do you have a car? If so, is it okay to steal it because I don’t have one?

    2. Jackie says:

      Hey Chuck,

The profit on those new games? About $3 per unit. It’s clear you know nothing about retail.

      Thanks for playing!

  35. Chucky D says:

Biblical law says this man would have to pay back what he stole several-fold. Sharia law would cut this man’s hand off. Which would you choose?

  36. Greg says:

It might be an excuse, it might be not. The problem is that we live in a country where such reasons for robbery are credible. People would laugh at such excuses in Norway or Sweden. Not here: it is to be taken seriously.
If we introduce the Shariah (Islamic) Law in the United States, 100% of the Wall Street, and almost 100% of the federal, state and local government would become armless or headless.

    1. Brian says:

      Lovely racist comment there, pardner.

      1. BigTuna87 says:

Why is that a racist comment? True Sharia law is intolerant of thieves and most would consider our corporate, wall street, and political leaders to be thieves. That is the point he is making.

  37. mr. mr. says:

The problem is that even if this guy had gone to the gubment, he would have had to wait out the bureaucratic mess just to qualify, then he would have been on a waiting list for a couple weeks., oh, and forget about gubment daycare so he could get a job.,. as of right now most states are out of funding for that, so they cant accept new children. im sure that has noting to do with over payed workers…… i dont mind my taxes going to families who are struggling, so long as they are working, and just need a little help to get by… generational welfare families that dont want to have to “act” white for 8 hours a day (think about it) to get a paycheck do not have my sympathy..

im not saying this guy took the right route, but if he was gonna steal he should have handed that note to is senator…

  38. NOBAMA 2012 says:

Two words for this guy…”FOOD STAMPS”

    1. I's Regusted says:

I wonder sir, have YOU ever needed to get food stamps? They are not always that easy to get. as other posters here have said, it’s much easer for illegals to get them, but if you’re a white legal american, the rules can be VERY strict, depending which state you are living in. In my state for instance, the cuto ff is one thousand dollars a moth income if you have 3 people in the household. After rent, utilities etc, that dosen’t leave much money to feed 3 people on. Yet if your income is onet housand and one dollars, you don’t qualify for food stamps as the goverment (crooks) think you’re rich. Go figure.

      1. Abbey says:

There’s a free meal on every corner and two in every school. He stole to support a habit.

      2. Becky says:

I have posted a few things in regard to this and I agree with the food stamps for Americans, no matter the color, is hard to get. Where I live the free meal on every corner is non-existent due to lack of funding and the food in schools is deplorable and half the kids do not eat it, In my daughters school, kids eat barely a 1/4 because it is nasty and sometimes the kids complain about upset stomachs. Yet it is supposed to be nutritionally balanced, more like cutting corners to keep a budget balanced.

I am not saying I agree with what he did, it was wrong and should be punished but at the same time he needs help. If what he said was legit, then they need to help his family. I did not read where he used a weapon, only a piece of paper so maybe he is not an addict but just a lousy first time criminal.

Who really knows, maybe he exhausted all his resources and he got desperate or maybe he is an addict, hard to tell during these times now. It is just a shame anymore.

  39. Princess Tyra says:

they got nothing on obama and the skanky michelle..

    1. mwalker says:

wow what has this woman ever did to you? stay off the hateraide

    2. Abbey says:

Yeah, the lovely Michele shops Target….now we KNOW this is a lie.

  40. ClearyJ says:

If he is truly that desperate, I’d like to help him and those similarly situated. If it could be done, I’d set up an escrow account where I, you (if you were willing), and others could put in a certain amount that wouldn’t pinch us every month. And then, if we could find people we could trust to COMPETENTLY and compassionately evaluate the needs of those who asked distribute enough for them to feed themselves and their kids, that would be a good thing; and it probably wouldn’t cost too much. It’s the way welfare OUGHT to be done, and it would not create incentives to not work.

  41. Pamela Beesly says:

I guess we just aren’t spreading the wealth fast enough for some people.

  42. eilspaul says:

this is obama’s america. keep ’em starving and angry and eventually you’ll have an uprising. encourage it, even. celebrate lawlessness, reinforce it. how is this any different from the wealth transfers that congressional dems and the president say is our patriotic duty? the end result is the same: people who work hand over their cash to people who don’t. on a side note, i don’t know why they’re hungry, since they have access to multiple meals a day of government cheese.

  43. Midge Mason Masters says:

If he really needed the money for food there are many other avenues than robbing people …

  44. Vendicar Decaruan says:

A fine example of how the invisible hand of the free market forces people to act against the best interests of each other.

What Americans don’t realize is that as long as they continue to listen to the same conservative free market economists that have created America’s economic mess the better things will be for America.

The cure for economic poison is more of the same.

  45. Chris says:

The robber, of course, is a total liar. Poor people get so much in food stamps, there’s no reason for them to go hungry. That is, unless they’re really fat, in which case the gluttonous monsters need to go on a diet.

  46. Living History says:

I have to be honest, If my husband get pulled over, his car impounded because we have not had the extra money to get in registration renewed for the last 6weeks, and loses our now only transportation, It would be about a month before we became desperate enough for something like this to feed our family. Its the sad fact that most of America is a month away from thievery or starvation. The local food bank wants our last years taxes to base our eligibility on. That was when we both were working and life was 100% better. I was denied assistance. We also do not qualify for foodstamps as of yet or state healthcare while my husband makes 15$ an hour. So we wait…..for disaster to strike or hoping for a miracle to give us a step up. Whats that saying about hope in one hand and….well you know it.

    1. Clara says:

Paul, thank you so much for this. Like Cindy, I was hipnog for "treaded comments" but beggers can't be choosers so I'll take what I can get. It really is a helpful tool and I appreciate the lesson.Take care.Your Friend, m.

  47. Abbey says:

Oh, silly me….I forget…this is CBS…they don’t want the truth out there. Let me say again, this guy didn’t steal for his kids; he probably stole for his bad habits. There is a free meal on every corner in America, not to mention all the free meals in the schools. There are a million other unemployed dads out there who DON”T steal. This whole thing is a LIE!!!

  48. James Woods says:

What about the desperate dad manager of a gamestop? Or the desperate dad employee? I guess they don’t matter.

People that do things like this deserve to be throwing their own funerals.

  49. pitter43 says:

Well, this is the Amerika that liberals have been wanting for decades and obama has been workinjg on since dolts put him in office. You wanted it, you got it.

  50. Consultofactus says:

Here’s a different story of a father feeding his kids…there was a man who immigrated from Denmark, had little formal education and lost the full use of his left hand through the ravages of polio. He settled in northern Iowa during the Great Depression. When the Rath Packing company shut down he lost his job in the smokehouse. To feed his family this man tied his weakened left hand to a shovel and shoveled coal from freight cars – 6 days per week. It was half the money he made at Rath, but the family struggled together doing assorted jobs around town like sewing, painting and seasonal farm work. No hand-outs, no charity, and especially NO CRIME. My grandfather would have rather died than bring dishonor to his household – that’s the difference between America then and now.

  51. Carl Curmudgeon says:

The robber told the clerk he was sorry, but he had to lead his children by example.

    1. Sreeja says:

LoveIsMakeup1 on November 7, 2011 My fovtriae food… Hmmm lol I love all food but probably a nice crisp salad lol(:And btw your gorgeous.-3

  52. Could be You some day says:

I feel for this guy. At one point we were very, very comfortable but the downturn changed all of the that. It took everything I had, but at one point I applied for food stamps. We only qualified for one month, but without that assistance it would have been pretty ugly around here…. and frankly I seriously considered that if we didn’t get approved I might have to do something drastic.

  53. SgtJE says:

This guy must have been turned away from the occupy protest meal line. You know how only those part of the protest to get someone else’s money can eat that food. Not some guy who is in need of food for his family. Regardless, this “dad” was in the wrong. Bad example for his kids, not to mention all the employees who are there earning a living are now robbed of merchandise to sell and boost revenue that would have turned into pay for them. Yes… They’ll get paid either way, I know. But get a job! Go cut grass! Go wash a car! Go bag groceries! Go flip burgers! Put your pride aside when it comes job selection!

  54. wilbur2734 says:

You’d think he’d steal food. Hmmmmm.

  55. All too obvious says:

Funny how CBS was unable to report his race…..hmmm yet another non-white breaking the law. Why can’t the media just grow some balls and report all the facts?

  56. Thug says:

Does Osama Obama count this as a shovel ready job

  57. Mark Carlton says:

We’ll probably see more and more of this as the economy stays in the doldrums. I really think there’s a good chance our standard of living 20 years hence will be about what it was in the late 1940s.

  58. Atom&Yves says:

He should have stopped by the RobberyStop store, instead.

  59. Adam says:

If I had robber the place I would have demanded $12,000 plus bus fare home.
