Players Reject NBA's Offer, Begin To Disband Union
LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — The NBA players have rejected the league's latest offer and are beginning the process to disband the union.
The decision likely jeopardizes the season.
The league had offered the players a 50-50 split on revenue.
Commissioner David Stern urged the players to accept the offer, saying it was the best the league could do.
The union called the proposal extremely unfair and union president and LA Laker Derek Fisher said the best decision for the players was to reject it.
"This is not a strike. We've continued to want to go to work, want to get back to work, want to negotiate . . . but that process has broken down," Fisher said at a news conference Monday.
Union executive director Billy Hunter says the players' association is prepared to file antitrust action against the NBA. He says this is the best situation so "players can get their due process."
