Santa Ana Man Arrested In Hit-And-Run Accident That Killed Toddler

SANTA ANA (CBS) — Police arrested a suspect Thursday in a deadly hit-and-run accident that killed a 2-year-old boy.

Darwin Almeida was killed while crossing 5th Street at North Bewley in Santa Ana with his mother and 1-year-old sister around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. Almeida was pulled from underneath the vehicle and pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Santa Ana police arrested Angel Perez after they tracked his SUV to a mobile home park, just a short distance from where the accident occurred.

Perez was taken into custody after failing a field sobriety test, Santa Ana police said.

He is expected to face charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, driving under the influence and driving without a license.

The toddler's mother and young sister suffered minor injuries in the accident.
