Caught On Tape: 500-Pound Black Bear Roams Through Glendale

GLENDALE (CBS) — Residents were on edge Thursday morning after an enormous black bear was sighted overnight.

Officers say a 500-pound bear was spotted scaling a concrete wall near Lowell Avenue and Franklin Street at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Glendale police officers began tracking the bear through yards and streets as it made its way through Glendale, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles.

Animal control officials requested officers shoot only rubber bullets near the bear to scare it back into the wilderness.

The bear disappeared into the hills at 12:25 a.m.

This was the second bear sighting in the area in the last month.

"Well, I'm a little surprised. We've lived up here for, you know, 15 years and it's been a long time. You know, we've seen two bears in the last couple months and I don't remember having any sightings prior to that," Glendale resident Fred Linkchorst told CBS2. "It's interesting and it's fun, but it's also, you know, a little scary when you think about a bear wandering around when you may not expect it. I didn't know about it this morning. I don't know if I'd be out here if I did."
