Report: Halloween Spending Up Despite Down Economy

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Consumer spending is up for Halloween 2011 despite a down economy, the National Retail Federation reports.

The average person will spend $72.31 on holiday decorations, costumes and candy this year, the NRF said. Statistics show that figure is up 9 percent from 2010.

Total Halloween spending is expected to top $6.8 billion, an increase of 18 percent over last year, the Federation said.

Seven in 10 Americans plan to celebrate the spooky holiday, and of that 69 percent, 44 percent plan on dressing up. The average consumer is expected to spend $26.52 on a costume.
