Red Nation Film Festival To Celebrate The Best In Native American Cinema
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — For the eighth year in a row, the Red Nation Film Festival will be honoring the best in Native American cinema.
"Hollywood has Oscar, Broadway has Tony, Television has the Emmy, and now the American Indian has the Red Nation Film Award," said President/Founder Joanelle Romero.
The festival will take place in Los Angeles Nov. 1-7. It will feature screenings, a Red is Green Carpet celebration and an awards gala that will cap off the week-long celebration during American Indian Heritage Month.
The Red Nation Awards Gala will be broadcast on Red Nation Television Channel (RNTC) on Thanksgiving Day/Week-end. RNTC is the first all native internet television channel.
"Red Nation Film Festival & Awards Gala is dedicated to breaking the barrier of racism by successfully replacing American Indian stereotype with recognition, new vision, arts, culture and economic prosperity by placing American Indian Filmmakers at the forefront of the entertainment industry and to introduce American Indian Filmmakers and Native Talent to larger, global mainstream audiences," Romero said.
Russell Means, an Oglala/Lakota and long time American Indian and civil right activist, and actor, will be honored with the "Oyate Wayanka Po Win Lifetime Achievement Award."
Michael Jackson will be posthumously receiving the Red Nation Humanitarian Award.
The American Indian Heritage Month Award will be given to Governor Jerry Brown.
All festival proceeds will benefit the Native Youth Matter Ending Youth Suicide on Reservations Red Nation Call to Action: National Awareness Campaign.
