Attorney Accused Of Trying To Smuggle Heroin And Meth To Gang Member Behind Bars

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have arrested an attorney they say tried to smuggle heroin and methamphetamine to a gang member in custody.

The Los Angeles Times says a drug-sniffing dog alerted deputies to the drugs on 47-year-old Kenneth Markman Friday at the downtown LA courthouse when he tried to meet with his client in lockup.

Deputies allegedly found 26 balloons containing tar heroin and meth, along with marijuana and syringes.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker says jailhouse intelligence tipped off deputies to the delivery, which had an estimated value of $30,000.

Markman has been booked on conspiracy to distribute narcotics, transportation of meth and heroin, transportation of narcotics into a custody facility and participation with street gang members in felonious conduct.

Markman is being held on $145,000 bail.
