SANTA ANA (AP) — An Orange County man has been sentenced to 20 years and four months in prison for causing a DUI crash that killed a woman on Valentine’s Day last year.
Gustavo Vega, 24, was convicted in June of murder, felony hit-and-run and felony possession of cocaine. He was sentenced Friday in Orange County Superior Court.
Prosecutors say Vega was driving drunk on Feb. 14, 2010 when he raced through a red light and slammed into a Toyota Corolla. The Toyota’s driver received minor injuries, but the passenger, 20-year-old Cara Lee, died at the scene.
Lee, a student at Orange Coast College, had worked as a model.
The Los Angeles Times says Vega fled the scene and was later found by police hiding in a nearby housing complex.
Vega’s blood-alcohol content was measured at .17 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
