Sole Survivor Of Salon Massacre Is ‘Fighting For Her Life’

LONG BEACH (CBS) — The sole survivor of Wednesday’s salon massacre in Seal Beach that killed eight people is fighting for her life at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

The Los Angeles Times reports 73-year-old Hattie Stretz is listed in critical condition, but is said to be improving.

CBS2 is investigating reports that Stretz’s daughter was cutting her hair at the time of the shooting, and is among the victims.

Police say five women and one man were killed inside Salon Meritage Wednesday afternoon, and another man and woman were later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Fournier.

Fournier’s ex-husband, Scott Dekraai, is the accused shooter. Police are now searching his Huntington Beach home, which he shares with his current wife, Mindy, for clues and evidence.

Neighbors told KCAL9 that 42-year-old Dekraai is a good man, loving father and devoted husband. An “extremely shocked” Stephanie Malchow described him as “super friendly.”

His ex-wife’s co-workers, however, painted a different picture and told KCAL9’s Stacey Butler that she was afraid of him, that he threatened her with guns in the past, and that she had a restraining order against him.

Fournier’s Garden Grove neighbors describe her as a hard-working mother of a 7-year-old boy.

“Well, she seemed like a very lovely girl. Sweet. She cared about her little boy. She played with my granddaughter,” neighbor Charlyn Page said.

Dekraai, who reportedly lost a leg in a tug boat accident in 2004, has no criminal history.

He and Fournier were reportedly in the middle of a bitter custody fight over their son.

Dekraai is scheduled to be arraigned on murder charges Friday.

Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Huff It is unclear if Huff is among the dead, or the lone survivor of the carnage who is fighting for her life. Which is it ? Need to better proff read.

    1. Diana H. says:

Yep totally contradicting their self. Please proof read and then proof read again. When you start printing information like that it can have bad consequences.

  2. T says:

c’mon guys – your talking about peoples families -please dont make mistakes like that ….

  3. Ricky says:

@Me – Read the story, it states she’s “one of the victims”, not one of the dead. A victim can be alive or dead. And it’s “proof” read, not “proff”. Maybe you should do some proof reading of your own. @T – There were no mistakes made.

    1. Sharon says:

Sorry Ricky but maybe you should read the article again. It states that there was a sole survivor and she is 73 year old Hattie Stretz. Huff (a victim) could not be alive then. The author made an error.

  4. T says:

Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Huff.

Really ??? They have already announced the only person they have told us has passed away was the male owner of the salon (and this article grouped her with him) – at best its bad wording…

    1. barcfutant says:

      The wording is fine.
The problem is that your average reader’s reading comprehension skills suck.

Here’s an example of bad wording:

“They have already announced the only person they have told us has passed away…”

    2. Facetious says:

Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Huff.

Dekraai, who reportedly lost a leg in a tug boat accident in 2004, has no criminal history. He and Huff were reportedly in the middle of a bitter custody fight over their son, Nicolas. It is unclear if she is one of the victims.

So is Huff one of the victim or not? The story was as clear as mud.

  5. T says:

thats pathetic – and i dont try to have intelligent conversations with people that are too deaf to hear – you understand what it says and what I meant – doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure it out.
    Just fix it …..

  6. The Big Logic says:

This guy had a great kill ratio, but I’m thinking he may have fired many shots into a small area with only 2 escape points, one of which he had blocked. One thing for sure, he was highly motivated.

your typical “white gang banger” from OC !!!! LOL

  7. Tyler says:

“Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Huff.”

Where in this article did it say they died?
Their just victims of this attack and one of them could still be fighting in the hospital.
So how about you all proof read what you write.

    1. lnm says:

But there is only a “sole survivor” and they named her

  8. J. marks says:

Yep, the news media just keeps piling on to the negative bandwagon making life seem perilous and scary. Some people are nuts; thus weird things happen.Live in the moment and plan for the future.

  9. Robert S. says:

Very sad for the 7 year old boy left behind, as he now has no parents. Why don’t people “think” before they act? When divorse happens, don’t let your emotions get the best of you. Remember….you can’t call a bullet back once it leaves the gun! Now, a lot of people have broken hearts too, and nothing was solved.

  10. Tony says:

It’s sad to see someone take innocent people’s lives away. I’ve been to Somalia & Iraq fighting during the wars and, it STILL amazes me how much senseless murder’s go on here at home. GOD BLESS all those who were touched by this TRAGEDY.

  11. D says:

There is a Sole Survivor named Hattie Stretz.. all else would be victims of death

  12. booba says:

This is chock full and loaded with errors!! First of all Fannin and Michelle Huff are victims and then the author doesn’t know if Michelle huff is a “victim”. Also to the smarty pants who says a victim could be dead or alive. The title states “Sole survivor” so that in plain English means that of all the victims only one(sole) survived. Some people should have a license to use a computer since it requires not being dyslexic.

  13. Ray says:

Why are people fixating on syntax.? The reporting is clear if anyone would just stop and think when they read. (Operative word being “think”)

    1. Sharon says:

I “think” you have no idea what you are talking about when you say the reporting is clear. I was a senior editor for a magazine for eleven years, and I would never have published such a piece of garbage.

  14. J says:

The article was clear to me. A victim, when used in the context above, is not intended to mean that they survived.

When it is noted that “two of the victims have been identified”, it is clear that they are deceased. They don’t label surviving victims as “identified”. And if they did survive, the sentence would continue to state their status.

Regardless, this crime has angered me. The tragedy is indescribable, especially for the innocent bystanders. It shows that no matter where you go, you are never safe from these monsters.

only people drugged by chem trails could buy such a amateur script. but, to play along, I hope the next page in the story has the old bag falling out a window, for effect. write in a dummy and fuzzy street cam to catch some of it too.

  16. AGoodScript says:

More than 150 dead birds were found today, bringing the total to 200, and that number was expected to rise in the coming days.
Forty birds and five seals were being cared for at the Wildlife Response Centre.
Taxpayers may have to cover costs if the Rena’s insurance was unable to fully cover the disaster, Key said earlier.
Key defended the Government’s reaction to the stranding and said: “I know everyone would love us to wave a magic wand but that’s not possible.”

  17. OCCUPYWALLSTREET says:

Come election time, the only survivors who will keep thier jobs will be those who kept a clean nose, watched the plainclothes. a change is a coming
