4 Injured In Newport Beach Apartment Complex Explosion

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — Four people were injured in an explosion and fire at a Newport Beach apartment complex Wednesday morning.

The explosion happened at Baywood apartments at Pacific View and San Miguel drives just before 10 a.m., officials said.

Emergency crews said they smelled gas when they arrived on the scene.

The explosion and fire may be related to a natural-gas fired water heater, fire officials said. The official cause has not been determined.

The fire was limited to one unit and was extinguished within a few minutes.

One person was treated on the scene while three others were taken to a local hospital with severe burns to their arms and faces.
