Sheriff Lee Baca Says He Welcomes FBI Probe Into His Handling Of County Jails
LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070) — Sheriff Lee Baca says he welcomes an FBI investigation into his handling of Los Angeles County jails after two supervisors criticized the sheriff while calling for an independent investigation.
Supervisor Gloria Molina says there's neglect over the jails and no excuse while Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky says let the chips fall where they may with an independent investigation into the jails.
The criticism comes amid another scathing report in which a rookie deputy resigned after claiming a supervisor allegedly ordered him to beat up a mentally ill inmate, then cover it up.
But Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez tells KNX 1070's Ed Mertz that Baca should resign.

"Baca would have a tough time right now justifying why he had to hold onto his job. Every week, there's another little scandal," Lopez said.
Meantime, after criticizing the FBI for sneaking a cell phone to an inmate to document abuses, the sheriff now says the FBI should feel welcome to investigate his handling of the jails.
