The shooting took place between Glendale Avenue and Brand Boulevard around 2:30 a.m., said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.
Lorenz said officers spotted a man armed with a handgun out an apartment building on San Fernando Road, and before they could even question him, the man started to move towards them and opened fire.
"A gun battle did ensue for a period of time, the suspect was eventually struck, paramedics were called to the location, and he was pronounced dead here on scene," said Lorenz.
A small caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.
The shooting will be investigated by Glendale police homicide detectives and the L.A. County District Attorney's OIS rollout team. There will also be an administrative investigation by the police department and city council.
