Boxer, Democrats Face GOP Opposition On $4 Billion Jobs Bill

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A White House plan that could create thousands of jobs in California is getting a major endorsement from one of the state's Democratic leaders.

KNX 1070's Charles Feldman reports on what could be a tough job for Senator Barbara Boxer: selling the public on the need for more federal help in job creation.

A fervent supporter of President Obama's proposed "American Jobs Act", Boxer (D-CA) thinks the passage of the bill would give the unemployed in California some much-needed hope.

The plan calls for nearly $4 billion tagged for highway and transit projects that could create up to 51,000 jobs in the short-term.

"This is going to mean jobs, jobs, jobs for our people, businesses for our private business," said Boxer in a conference call with reporters.

Democrats will have to overcome heavy partisan resistance before Obama can get congressional Republicans to support the bill.

Despite the stiff opposition, however, Boxer said she remains optimistic.

"I think we have a very good chance of moving forward on this because the people want us to do it, people are hurting, construction workers are hurting," said Boxer.
