More Sinkholes Spreading Along San Pedro Roadway

SAN PEDRO (CBS) — A stretch of coastal road in San Pedro is on the move and is making local residents and drivers a bit nervous.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports the sinkholes are on the north side of Paseo Del Mar Road.

Cracks in the roadway extend for several hundred feet on either side, indicating that the stretch of the cliffs below White Point Nature Preserve and park is noticeably shifting towards the ocean.

Lifelong resident Ken Besich recalled when a housing development was lost to similar activity some 80 years ago.

"This was back in the early '20s or 30s when they had to actually shut down the area," said Besich.

No homes are currently at risk, but city and county engineers are working to determine the scope of the problem and prevent any movements that could threaten the area.

Among the potential steps: engineers could relocate certain power poles and reroute a storm drain to prevent any further damage to city infrastructure.
