Lockdown Lifted After Murder-Suicide At Riverside County School; No Students Hurt
JURUPA VALLEY (CBS) — A man shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide that took place in the parking lot of a Jurupa Valley high school, deputies said Wednesday.
The shooting was reported around 10:40 a.m. at Patriot High School, 4355 Camino Real, just south of the Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Reports from deputies indicated the man was found dead in the parking lot, with a gun lying next to him, and the woman was gravely wounded.
She was transported to Riverside Community Hospital by ambulance where officials said she later died. The woman was a volunteer at the school.
Their identities were not immediately released. Unconfirmed reports say the couple was married.
No students were involved in the shooting, according to sheriff's officials. But the campus was placed on lockdown, with students restricted to their classrooms, while deputies searched the area.
Parents desperate to confirm their children's welfare were barred from entering the school grounds. In one case, a janitor had to hold back several adults trying to access the campus via an athletic field.
Sheriff's deputies declared the campus secure at 11:50 a.m. and cleared school officials to resume normal operations.
Administrators decided to continue to hold students until an orderly release could be effected, according to sheriff's officials.
