(CBS) — The Pac-12 conference has reprimanded USC QB Matt Barkley for his comments about ASU LB Vontaze Burfict before Saturday’s loss to the Sun Devils.

Barkley said of the All-American candidate, “He’s a dirty player. His switch is always on. And it’s not a good switch.”

Burfict went on to intercept a pass in the red-zone, and then helped Barkley up after the tackle later in the game.

From the Pac-12

“All of our student-athletes must adhere to the Pac-12’s policies on Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct, which call for our student athletes to treat opponents with respect and create and ensure a collegiate atmosphere in which to conduct competition. In these circumstances, Mr. Barkley’s comments were a clear violation of Conference rules and he is being appropriately reprimanded.”

Lane Kiffin told the media, ” We talked to Matt right after he made that comment and told him it was not appropriate. He understood.”

I thought this was way out of line on matt’s end. There was one play in particular where Vontaze actually helped Barkley up after he was knocked down. In my eyes that is the picture of sportsmanship. I think it is a good thing that Barkley will be disciplined because it has come to the point where athletes think that they can say whatever they want if there is a mic nearby.
