LA Native Diana Nyad Ends Latest Cuba-To-Florida Swim

SANTA MONICA (CBS) — Southland endurance swimmer Diana Nyad announced Sunday that she was ending her attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida.

Nyad's medical team were concerned of the long-term cumulative effect additional jellyfish stings could have on her body. She had already been stung twice by Portuguese man o' war jellyfish.

The marathon swimmer made the announcement on her Web site.

The 62-year-old swimmer is a sports journalist and regular commentator on KCRW radio in Santa Monica.

She was attempting to break a world record she set more than 30 years ago when she swam from the Bahamas to Florida.

Last month, Nyad had to stop halfway through the grueling 60-hour swim when she suffered a severe asthma attack.
