Compton Woman Accused Of Shining Laser At Airliner, Sheriff's Copter

COMPTON (CBS) — A 27-year-old Compton woman was behind bars Sunday on suspicion of shining a laser pointer at an airliner and sheriff's helicopter.

Kimberly Rogers was arrested at her home in the 1700 block of West 153rd Street after authorities traced a beam of focused light there, said sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker. She was being held at the Century jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

On Friday, a sheriff's helicopter was dispatched to the area after air traffic controllers at Los Angeles International Airport reported that an airliner had been targeted by the laser, according to authorities.

"The flight crew kept an eye on the home and directed patrol deputies to the origin of the laser beam," Lt. Art Chavez of the Compton Station said.

Soon after, the sheriff's helicopter was targeted, but no injuries were reported.

The case marked the seventh of its kind in the past year, Parker said, adding that five people have been arrested for shining laser pointers at Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department aircraft.
