Carson Mayor Stalled In Bid To Have Street Named After Himself

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The mayor of a Southland city was under fire Thursday from critics who say his plan to name a street after himself is nothing more than shameless self-promotion.

Mayor Jim Dear of Carson wants the City Council to approve his proposal to name one of the streets in the Boulevards at South Bay commercial and residential property after him.

But the project's developer has asked the city's Public Works Commission to deny the request to establish "Jim Dear Boulevard" atop an old dump on the 157-acre property.

The City Council was deadlocked in a vote on Wednesday on a motion seeking approval for the new street name, the Torrance Daily Breeze reported.

Councilman Elito Santarina, who is expected to side with the mayor, was not present for the meeting, according to the Associated Press.

Another vote is scheduled for Oct. 4.
