Man Dies After Trying To Save Pet Bird From Burning Condo

SAN DIMAS (CBS) — A 60-year-old man who went back to his burning condominium to save a pet bird was found dead Tuesday outside the building, authorities said.

The man, who hasn't yet been identified, was found in front of the condominium complex at 927 N. Bidwell Road when crews arrived at 3:55 p.m., a county fire dispatcher said.

The fire that damaged his and a neighboring unit, rendering both uninhabitable, was knocked down 33 minutes later, the dispatcher reported.

It reportedly wasn't clear if the man had succumbed to smoke inhalation or exhaustion.

The fate of the bird was not immediately clear, the dispatcher said.

Investigators were on scene trying to determine what caused the fire.
