TV's Brightest Stars Shine At 63rd Emmy Awards
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The TV Academy is clearly mad for "Mad Men." Four years, four wins in a row as Outstanding Drama Series.
KCAL9 and CBS2 Entertainment Reporter Suzanne Marques was behind-the-scenes Sunday night to capture all the glitz, glam and to talk to the big winners...many of them surprises.
It was no surprise that Julianna Margulies won as Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her starring role in CBS's "The Good Wife." She was the critical favorite to win in most polls. It's her second Emmy, the first came for her role on "ER."
Even though Jim Parsons won last year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy, for his work on CBS's "Big Bang Theory," he genuinely seemed shocked and surprised to be standing on the stage the second year in a row. "This is so odd...for so many reasons," he smiled, after winning. He told Marques, "I do feel more shocked. Maybe because I was naive."
Melissa McCarty, from CBS's "Mike & Molly," was crowned, literally, the Outstanding Actress in a Comedy. She told the audience, "It's my first and best pageant ever!'
The audience gave presenter Charlie Sheen an enthusiastic welcome. He took the opportunity to, as he said, get something off his chest...right away. Before presenting he wanted to speak directly to his former "Two and a Half Men" colleagues.
"From the bottom of my heart...I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together, and I know you will continue to make great television."
ABC's "Modern Family" won the first four Emmys of the evening, capturing best supporting comedy actress (Julie Bowen), best supporting comedy actor (Ty Burrell, Bowen's TV hubby), best writing for a comedy and best direction for a comedy series.
CBS's "Amazing Race," made a comeback of sorts. After losing the Emmy last year for Outstanding Reality Competition Program to Bravo's "Top Chef," they won again in a category some thought might go to "American Idol," in their first Simon Cowell-free season.
