Arrest Made In Shooting That Killed Toddler, Injured 2 Others

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — An arrest has been made in connection with a shooting that killed a 3-year-old girl and critically injured a 22-year-old pregnant woman and her 3-year-old daughter.

Police announced in a news conference Thursday that Brandon Taray Barnes, 19, was arrested just two blocks from the scene of the shooting in the 1100 block of D Street in San Bernardino Wednesday night.

Barnes is accused of shooting three victims as they sat on a front porch of a home in the 1300 block of D Street at 8 p.m. Monday night.

Detectives say the crime was an act of revenge.

"I just know the family was crying, "Marie Ortiz told CBS2 after the shooting. "The mom was crying; the grandma was crying. I had to pray for her, pick her up and say to her, 'Everything's going to be OK.' She was three years old and the mom was just in shock."

Barnes has been booked on one count of homicide, two counts of attempted homicide and seven counts of attempted homicide with a handgun, according to San Bernardino police.

"I make a commitment. He will never come out to harm another citizen in this county again ," said District Attorney Michael Ramos.

If convicted, Barnes is facing 305 years to life in prison.

Officials say the pregnant woman who was shot is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive. They say the 3-year-old victim is in critical condition but is responding to doctors using hand gestures.

A memorial fund has been established for 3-yr-old Nylah Franco-Torrez at First Valley Credit Union in San Bernardino.
