Suspect Arrested After 'Suspicious' Package Is Found On Bus In Koreatown

KOREATOWN (CBS) — An arson and explosives unit was sent to check out of a suspicious backpack on a bus in Koreatown Saturday evening.

The bus, then located at Vermont Ave and Wilshire Boulevard, was evacuated as a precaution, as was an apartment building across from the bus, according to officials.

About 60-70 law enforcement agents in all participated in the operation.

Reporting for KCAL9 and CBS2, Kara Finnstrom reported that a passenger got on the bus in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. and raised suspicion with the driver.

Finnstrom spoke with Deputy Sheriff Christopher Landavazo who said the passenger had a strange looking backpack and that he also said "some cryptic things to the bus driver and ... that prompted our response."

Landavazo says it's now "business back to usual."

The man with the backpack is under arrest and the incident is being investigated further.

Finnstrom reports the package was not a bomb or an explosive. The package was detonated.
