Officials Rescue Naked Mental Health Patient From Chilly Marina Del Rey Harbor

MARINA DEL REY (CBS) — A man who ran away from a mental health hospital jumped into the harbor naked Saturday in Marina del Rey.

The incident happened at about 2:25 p.m. near the 4400 block of Admiralty Way, near Tony P's Restaurant, said Sgt. Jeffrey Olander of the Marina del Rey sheriff's station.

The man eventually tired of being in the chilly water and climbed aboard one of the sheriff's patrol boats.

Los Angeles police officers were trying to detain the man, who had run from a mental health hospital while he was being evaluated, Olander said.

"The man, who was naked and had a catheter and IV tube inserted, continued to run from the officers," Olander said. "The man jumped into the harbor."

The man continued evading officers, swimming between docked vessels and under obstacles, Olander said. Sheriff's deputies responded in patrol cars and boats to assist.

"Repeated attempts were made to coax the man onto the adjacent docks or onto he sheriff's patrol vessels," Olander said.

Deputies safely detained the man and released him to LAPD officers.
