LA Remains On High Alert With Anniversary Of 9/11 Looming

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — On the eve the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, law enforcement is on alert and visible in key transportation hubs here in the Southland.

"As we come upon this weekend, we're concerned, a little bit anxious," said Dep. Chief Michael Downing of LAPD Counter-Terrorism and Special Ops.

Although Los Angeles is not mentioned in the credible but unconfirmed terror threat that makes specific references about car bombs in Washington, D.C., and New York, thousands of Los Angeles police officers, as well as sheriff's deputies are expected to be working throughout the weekend.

At LAPD's state-of-the-art high-tech operations center -- a 24/7 hub that gives a global perspective of everything that's going on in the region -- law enforcement officials monitor community tips and credible threats.

"Information is coming into our crime center and there's nothing significant to report," Capt. Steven Sambar of LAPD Major Crimes told CBS2.

From LAX to the LA Port and at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, law enforcement agencies have extra resources, patrols and additional personnel around high target areas. Those areas include the Downtown Financial District, hotels and high traffic tourist attractions.

"LA looks good and secure and peaceful," Downing said.

But the vigilance continues – this weekend and beyond.

"We have all the preparations in order. It's the areas that we're not sure about, the lone wolf, the single actors, somebody who's inspired by this holiday and Al Qaeda that we're a little worried about," Downing added.

We're told that officers count on the extra eyes and ears. Anyone who hears or sees anything suspicious is asked to contact police.
