Professor Wanted For Drug Dealing Avoids Arrest By Posting Bond

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS/AP) — San Bernardino County authorities say a fugitive university professor avoided arrest by having a bondsman post his bond this week.

Steve Kinzey, 43, is wanted on suspicion of leading a motorcycle gang and methamphetamine drug ring.

An undercover operation in August busted nine people in connection with the drug ring. Deputies also raided Kinzey's Inland Empire home and found nearly one pound of methamphetamine with a street value of up to $12,000.

Kinzey works as an associate professor of kinesiology at California State University, San Bernardino.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that a bondsman posted a $300,000 bond, which is based on a standard fee schedule. Sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller says that nullified an arrest warrant out for Kinzey, and he can remain free until a Nov. 10 arraignment.

Miller says that had Kinzey, of Highland, turned himself in, a hearing would have been held where authorities could have asked a judge to hold him without bail.
