Grandmother, 73, Wins The Lottery Using Kids And Grandkids Birthday Numbers

ALHAMBRA (CBS) — Audelia Ramirez, 73, doesn't speak English...but we're betting when she won $9 million in the California Lottery August 31 she found just the right words.

The actual jackpot was $18 million but Ramirez will split with a winner who has yet to come forward from San Diego.

Ramirez's lucky numbers of 22, 27, 32, 31, 2 and Mega 11 came from birthdays of her six kids and ten grandchildren.

Through an interpreter, Ramirez told KCAL9's Edward Lawrence that she has been playing the lottery since 1982. And it's why she knew she would always win ...Ramirez believes in fate. And family. When the numbers were announced on TV, she immediately started hugging everyone.

She always plays the same numbers...usually three or four dollars. In this particular win, $4 translates now into $9 million.

She also said, "I thank God for giving me the opportunity to win this for my family and for us."

Audelia worked in a factory printing books. Her husband worked maintenance for hotels. She promises the money won't change them much. It's time for a new house and maybe a trip to visit relatives in El Paso.

A family friend, Chris Rodriguez, has known the new millionaires since they moved to this country seeking a better life. He says simply, "You guys have been struggling for many years. Seems like they deserve it. The Virgin Mary helped them. They need it."
