Cooling Centers To Help Residents Cope With Excessive Heat Thursday

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Cooling centers will be open across the Southland Thursday to help residents cope with excessive heat.

Temperatures are expected reach the upper 90s in downtown Los Angeles, as temperatures soar above 100 degrees in the valley. An excessive heat warning will also be in effect in Riverside County and desert areas.

The UV index will be at a 10 Thursday, which means those with fair skin can burn after just four minutes outside.

Health experts recommend staying indoors with the air conditioner on, wearing light, loose-fitting clothes and hydrating frequently.

If you do need to go outside, wear sunscreen, a hat, and watch for any signs of heat stroke or exhaustion.

Temperatures are expected to cool down by Friday, as the marine layer returns this weekend.
