Back-To-School Heat Wave To Keep LAUSD Students Indoors

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Sweltering temperatures throughout Southern California will limit student activity on the first day of school for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

KNX 1070's John Brooks reports the play yards at one of the district's newest campuses in San Fernando will be all but empty on Wednesday.

Temperatures well over 100 degrees will force most students to spend opening day on this brand new and still-unnamed campus on Arroyo Ave. in their air-conditioned classrooms.

"It's just heat...we live in California," said LAUSD Superintendent John Daisy. "What's the alternative? We don't have to put up with blizzards."

With nearly 400 schools opening for the new year and over 700,000 kids enrolled in the district, traffic is also expected to tighten up around campuses.

"Anybody who's driving, be mindful that the youth are coming to school, very excited, probably not paying as close attention to crossing the streets," said Deasy.
