Armed Gunman Surrenders After Barricading Himself Inside Apartment

DOWNEY, Calif. (CBS) — Authorities arrested a 24-year-old armed gunman Tuesday, after he barricaded himself inside an apartment in Downey.

The confrontation started at about 9 p.m. Monday and continued early Tuesday morning at an apartment building, according to Downey police Sgt. Terry Goeckner.

Officers responded to a report of an assault. The armed man barricaded himself in an apartment and refused to surrender, Goeckner said.

CBS2's Kristine Lazar reported that the trouble started when the suspect pointed a weapon at the boyfriend of his niece.

His mother said he then barricaded himself because he was recently released from jail for car theft, and he did not want to go back.

A sheriff's SWAT team was called and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, but no shots have been fired.

He was taken into custody without incident just after 6:30 a.m.
