1,158-Acre Hill Fire Now 80 Percent Contained

HESPERIA (AP) — Firefighters continue to gain the upper hand on a wildfire that erupted along the main interstate between Southern California and Las Vegas and hope to have it contained by Sunday evening.

CalFire spokesman Glenn Barley says the fire that erupted Friday on the center divider of Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass is 80 percent contained.

On Saturday, officials lifted evacuation orders for 1,500 homes that were evacuated.

The fire quickly grew to 1,158 acres, or nearly 2 square miles, jumping the freeway and burning chaparral in rolling hills that form the nearby San Bernardino National Forest and rural areas of San Bernardino County.

Flames destroyed two mobile homes and damaged two other structures. A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and another suffered a medical-related injury.
