Oxnard Residents Band Together To Save McGrath State Beach And Park

OXNARD CBS) — McGrath State Beach and camp grounds was planned to be shut down after Labor Day but a group of residents has banded together to make sure the spot gets taken off the state's endangered list.

The state said they could not afford a $500,000 sewer line replacement so residents decided to foot the bill themselves.

Or at least come up with creative ways to raise money. Just short of bake sales (and those are probably next), lots of folks in Oxnard are pitching in.

And as Dave Bryan reported on KCAL9 News at 9 and 10 and on CBS2 News at 11 p.m. there are many ideas in the fire.

First, there's always cash donations.

Residents and beach lovers are asked to send money to:

Save McGrath State Beach
Channel Coast District Office
San Pedro Street
Ventura, CA 93001

They're also urging all residents to enter "America's Favorite Park" (sponsored by Coca-Cola. The contest closes Sept. 6 at www.livepositively.com). The winning park gets $100,000.

Oxnard has pledged another $50,000, California says it can kick in $100,000 and they are also applying for a $250,000 grant from the feds.
