Riverside Crews Stop Brush Fire Before It Scorches Homes

CANYON CREST (CBS) — A brush fire that broke out in Riverside Thursday afternoon damaged a condominium but was stopped before it could reach houses lining a canyon.

Crews were working to put out the four-alarm blaze, which was reported around 5:35 p.m. in the vicinity of Sunset Ranch Drive and Arlington Avenue.

Flames reached the exterior of a condominium complex at El Capitan and Sunset Ranch drives, damaging one unit, according to a fire captain.

No injuries were reported.

The fire approached houses in the Canyon Crest neighborhood, but dying winds allowed firefighters to widen their defenses.

The blaze was declared fully contained at 5:45 p.m.

One fire engine became stuck while a crew was replenishing its reserve. The vehicle was sinking at one point, and a semi truck with no trailer was requested to tow it to safety, according to officials at the scene.

The cause of the fire was not disclosed. However, two arson investigators were dispatched to the location.

There was no immediate word on how many acres burned.

Crews were expected to be mopping up until 9 p.m.
