CERRITOS (CBS) — A memorial was held Wednesday to mark the 25th anniversary of a horrific plane crash.

An Aeromexico DC-9 collided with a small place over the city of Cerritos on Aug. 31, 1986.

The flaming wreckage plunged into a residential area, killing 82 people, including 15 on the ground.

At least 20 homes were destroyed or damaged.

The victims were remembered during a ceremony at the Air Disaster Memorial, located in the Cerritos Sculpture Garden.

“An Aeromexico DC-9 collided with a small place”: fault was on the small ‘plane’ and air-traffic control.

I remember this day well. I was driving through Cerritos on the 91 Freeway minutes after this happened. I am glad there was a memorial day. We need to remember this tragic day out of respect for the victims and the familes.
